In celebration of their upcoming tour of Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, Toronto, Canada’s EAMON MCGRATH and Brussels, Belgium’s THE HILLS MOVER began an inter-continental writing and recording project over the course of 2016’s winter months, sending ideas, lyrics and instrumental tracks across the Atlantic.
The result is “Shadow On The Night”, a dark and atmospheric piece where McGrath and The Hills Mover offer a firsthand depiction of the unique sense of loneliness often experienced by those living in sprawling, over-populated modern cities.
McGrath name-checks Toronto landmarks like the Horseshoe Tavern and the majestic and lantern-covered Palmerston Avenue, while The Hills Mover channels historical events in Brussels’ history such as the covering of the Senne, as the two narrators conduct a search for what it is that defines their identity in the cities they call home.
Toronto/Berlin road-hardened electronic artist Ryder (whitewhale.ca/label/ryder
) adds his synth-laden production to the atmosphere already created by The Hills Mover and McGrath’s acoustic guitars and folk harmonies. The result is a complex and intimate view of two different urban landscapes that have both united these songwriters, yet also set them vastly apart.
EAMON MCGRATH and THE HILLS MOVER appear in Europe this summer courtesy of Berlin’s Flix Agency, and the Small Fish Agency, based in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
